Albinism is a hereditary, non-contagious genetic condition characterised by reduced or absent production of melanin in the skin, hair and eyes. Persons with albinism frequently experience low vision, sensitivity to light and heightened vulnerability to ultraviolet radiation, including sunburn and skin cancer. These characteristics require regular access to sunscreen, protective clothing, dermatological and ophthalmological care, assistive technologies and reasonable accommodations in education and employment.
The term “persons with albinism” is preferable to “albinos,” as it places the person and their dignity before the genetic condition.
It is estimated that approximately 20,000 to 30,000 persons with albinism live in Mozambique, dispersed throughout the country.
The most serious violations against persons with albinism in Mozambique include murders, abductions, attempted abductions, mutilations, desecration of graves and trafficking in body parts.

Protection and access to justice: community early warning and confidential reporting mechanisms; survivor-centred legal, medical, psychosocial and referral support; and training for police, justice and border personnel.
Health and prevention: sunscreen and protective items, eye tests, prescription glasses, dermatological screening, early referral for suspected skin cancer, and mental-health support.
Safe and inclusive education: teacher training, large-print learning materials, low-vision aids, anti-bullying measures, reasonable adjustments and safer access to school in high-risk communities.
Community-led change: continuous dialogue with families, schools, faith and community leaders, the media and traditional medicine practitioners to challenge harmful myths without stigmatising communities.
Livelihoods and leadership: adapted vocational training, entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, workplace awareness, and direct capacity support for organisations led by persons with albinism.
Persons with albinism need more than protection from attacks. They need the conditions necessary to learn, work, participate, lead and live with health, safety, autonomy and dignity.
Help African and Caribbean Elders Overcome Isolation
Across Northern Ireland, around 500 to 700 African and Caribbean residents are aged 68 and over, with nearly 45% at risk of loneliness and social isolation. Many are among the most excluded from community and social services, facing isolation, limited resources, health inequalities, and barriers to participation in wider society.
Following the racial tensions and unrest experienced earlier this year, many older African and Caribbean people feel even more vulnerable and disconnected from their communities. For those already experiencing loneliness, these challenges have deepened feelings of exclusion and insecurity.
Isolation has serious consequences. It can contribute to depression, anxiety, declining physical health, reduced mobility, and a loss of confidence and purpose. Without meaningful social connections, many elders face worsening health and wellbeing outcomes.
Your support will help Nations of Mother Earth provide culturally meaningful activities, wellbeing programmes, social gatherings, and community support for African and Caribbean elders in Belfast and across Northern Ireland. These activities reduce loneliness, promote wellbeing, strengthen social integration, and create valuable intergenerational connections where culture, history, and lived experiences can be shared and celebrated.

Breaking the Cycle: Supporting Black Youth Beyond Drug Abuse
Too many African and Caribbean young people in Belfast and across Northern Ireland are growing up facing challenges that can increase vulnerability to substance misuse, including social exclusion, racism, isolation, poverty, and limited access to culturally appropriate support services. Research has highlighted that minority ethnic communities experience barriers to full participation in education, employment and community life, while ethnic minority groups can face additional barriers in accessing drug and health services.
Drug abuse does not begin with drugs. It often begins with a lack of opportunity, a lack of belonging, poor mental wellbeing, trauma, discrimination, and the feeling that nobody is listening.
